What is the Legal Practice Course?
If a candidate wants to be a solicitor, LPC is the training to get basic approach of how to conduct public dealings, watertight contract completion, and much more. This post graduate course is highly known for its huge volume of intense material that a candidate must deal and work with.
As mentioned above, it’s a post graduate program, an undergraduate law degree or for non-law students, Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) to convert the degree is must.
The criteria to qualify as a solicitor is quite different in Scotland compared to rest of the UK. Scotland have a similar course of Diploma in Professional Legal Practise (DPLP) in place of LPC.
What does the LPC involve?
The course is broken down into 2 stages:
Three essential practise areas are covered in stage one,
• business law and practice
• litigation, including civil and criminal
• property law and practice.
Other skills include:
• advising and advocacy
• interviewing
• practical legal research
• writing and drafting.
Some more major areas are:
• professional conduct and regulation
• solicitors' accounts
• taxation
• wills and administration of estates.
three major vocational electives are in stage two. Those heading to city firms have following choices:
• private acquisitions
• public companies
• debt/banking.
If categorized in relevance to small and medium sized firms, such as, domestic and family law, commercial law, employment and environmental law, immigration and welfare law, there is vast range of choices to be pursued as career.
A mixture of private study, workshops and lectures are included in most of the above courses. Assessments comprise of online tests and tutorials. Moreover, the assessment can also be done by written assignments. Knowledge based open or closed book assessments, verbal presentations, and course works.
How long does the LPC take?
The courses usually initialize in September. The duration of completion of course may differ depending on the location you are pursuing the course at.
If a candidate pursues the course as full time, it shall complete in a year, otherwise, it may take up to two years if taken as part time. However, the electives can be completed over a longer period of time, take either separately or studies altogether.
Stage one must be completed under one course provider however stage 2 gives the feasibility to be studied under more than one authorized course provider.
